Which Probiotic Should you choose?

seen, with probiotics to help with heaps of different health problems.  These include Eczema and the relief of the itch of eczema, Diarrhea treatment and prevention, especially when travelling, Immunity in adults and children, Candida albicans overgrowth’s and thrush, Tummy bugs and Allergies.  They have options available in powder and capsules, as well as a Dairy and gluten free range.  They have products that are specific for children, from 0 onwards.

We have some other probiotic strains from other ranges too, such as the Natures Way Primadophilus range, which includes Reuteri, specifically for tummy bugs and upsets like rotovirus, Optima, which is a multi strain probiotic and Primadophilus for kids a chewable probiotic tablets for children.

So lets look at the individual probiotic strains and what they have been shown to do in the body.

Lactobacillus plantarum (299v) – This strain is found in the Ethical Nutrients IBS support and has been shown to help specifically in medically diagnosed Irritable bowel syndrome.  Lactobacillus plantarum has been extensively researched and in studies 95% of IBS sufferers had improvement in all symptoms, 100% had resolution of their abdominal pain within 4 weeks and 60% had an improvement in diarrhoea and constipation.   I have personally tried this product myself and have had first hand results, in a reduction of my IBS symptoms.  We also have a customer who has used this on her cat which had an inflammatory bowel condition, that wasn’t responding to vet medicine.  She noticed some improvement after 1 week of administration with results reducing the longer it was administered for.

Lactobacillus paracasei (LP-33) – This strain is found in the Ethical Nutrients Allergy Control, a clinically trialled probiotic strain to reduce the frequency of allergic rhinitis.  In clinical trials Lactobacillus paracasei was shown to reduce the frequency and severity of allergy symptoms, assist with house dust mite allergies, relieve symptoms of hay fever symptoms, allergic sensitivity including a blocked itchy runny nose, sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, puffy and sore eyes and an itchy throat.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus (GG) (LGG) – This strain is found in the Ethical Nutrients Eczema Relief and also their Eczema Shield powder.  A clinical trial showed that this probiotic can support a normal healthy immune system in adults and children.  In infants and children under the age of 2 years, it may  reduce itching associated with eczema, reduce sleeplessness associated with eczema and reduce the symptoms of eczema.  The capsule can be opened and added to water or formula for those unable to swallow a capsule, or choosing the powdered form would be advisable.  When mothers take this probiotic strain during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, it was shown that it may reduce the incidence of children developing eczema, as well as reduce the symptoms of eczema – such as itching and sleeplessness, as well as reduce the incidence of children with atopic conditions including allergic rhinitis and food allergy.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae (boulardii) – This probiotic strain is found in the Ethical Nutrients Gastro Relief,  Travel Bug and also Candex.  I love the Gastro Relief and the Travel Bug and have used these extensively with all kinds of gastrointestinal bugs and upsets, in not only travellers tummy upsets, but also in cases of bad food poisoning.  It has also shown great benefit in those with antibiotic associated diarrhoea.  S.boulardii is well tolerated and effective.   When travelling, Travel Bug is taken 5 days before leaving, to populate the bowel with this bacteria and then taken throughout the trip.  If you do eat something that upsets your digestion, you increase the dosage, to reduce the symptoms.  As I have already mentioned, I have used this and the Gastro Relief a lot and found it to be the BEST thing I have ever found for tummy upsets, working super fast to provide relief.  We have had good success with the Ethical Nutrients Candex and especially in women with bacterial vaginal problems.

Lactobacillus acidophillus – One of the most widely researched and used strains and usually found in combination with Bifidobacterium lactis.  Ethical Nutrients use patented forms of these strains, that have been clinically trialled.  It has been shown that these probiotics aid in the maintenance of a normal healthy gastrointestinal system and digestive function.  After taking a course of antibiotics, these strains of probiotics can assist in maintaining the balance of good bacteria. It is used for helping with the symptoms of bloating, gas or flatulence and helps maintain normal healthy urogenital flora.  Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM, as found in Ethical Nutrients Inner Health Plus  is a medical strength strain of probiotic that can specifically survive the passage through the intestinal tract, as it is acid and bile resistant.

Natures Way have some very important probiotics in their Primadophilus Probiotic Family. These include:

Lactobacillus Reuteri HA-188 – Found in Primadophilus Reuteri powder and capsules, Reuteri is one of the first strains of friendly bacteria to pass from mother to child where it rapidly colonises and becomes an important part of the gastrointestinal flora.  Besides the generic positive effects of L. reuteri, it is unique in synthesizing an antimicrobial compound called reuterin that can inhibit gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, yeasts, fungi and protozoa. Lactobacilli Reuteri can also positively affect the growth, proliferation and integrity of the intestinal mucosa, which in turn can affect nutrient absorption. We have excellent results with Reuteri for tummy bugs and upsets in babies, children and adults alike and particularly with Rotavirus.

We have also had first hand experience using this exact product with a White tiger here in NZ, who got a tummy upset and started to loose her condition.   This was noticeable particularly in her coat and her hind legs.  She was given a course of the Primadophilus Reuteri powder and her keeper could not believe how well she responded and the fast improvements we obtained.  By the end of the course (1 x 142 gram container) she had completely regained her condition, her appetite and she looked a million dollars.

Probiotics for the entire family

Probiotics are so important, especially after a tummy upset or a course of antibiotics.

Primadophilus Optima is a multi strain probiotic capsule, which contains 14 different clinically trialled strains of probiotic bacteria.  Each enteric coated capsule contains 35 billion CFU (colony forming units), which release in the intestinal tract and are not destroyed by the stomachs hydrochloric acid.   For those 12 years and up and suitable for vegetarians.

Primadophilus Children is a powder, containing a proprietary blend of 3 billion CFU per teaspoon.  The strains are Lactobacillus rhamnosus, casei and acidophilus and Bifidobacterium breve, longum, bifidum and infantis.  This product may contain traces of dairy and soy protein.

Primadophilus for Kids, is the only chewable probiotic we have.  It has a tasty orange flavour and uses sorbitol and xylitol as the sweeteners.  You get 3 billion CFU in each chewable, containing a combination of Lactobacillus rhamnosus and acidophilus and  Bifidobacterium longum.
