If you do not have an elevated total cholesterol level yourself, then you probably know someone who does have a “higher than recommended” level or an imbalance between their good and bad cholesterol.

Medically, your GP has drugs available to help to correct these imbalances, but today I thought I would show you the natural options healthyonline has for helping to lower cholesterol levels.

Supplements for helping to lower cholesterol

BergaMet Mega:  One of our top products for helping with not only higher cholesterol, but also higher blood sugar levels in the body.  Featuring an extract from the Bergamot orange (Citrus Bergamia Risso) and providing a rich source of antioxidants and flavonoids. In a double blind placebo trial conducted at the Department of Cardiology at the University of Rome on 237 patients, the following data was produced:

*  BergaMet could be an effective nutriceutical approach to assist in cardiovascular health
*  BergaMet may assist in maintaining healthy normal cholesterol in healthy people
BergaMet may assist in healthy blood glucose levels.

I know its a lot of “may help” and “could help” but remember, you cant make claims that a natural product is going to provide a particular action, so may and could or studies have shown, is really the only terminology we can use.

You can read about my own results from taking BergaMet for helping to lower my own cholesterol levels

Cholestrienol:
Ethical Nutrients are one of our favourite ranges, as they are made by Healthworld Australia, the manufacturers of the Practitioner Only range Metagenics.  All Healthworld products are highly researched, just as Cholestrienol is.  Cholestrienol has been clinically trialled to help to Maintain Normal Cholesterol and Triglyceride Levels. Each capsule contains the clinically trialled Citrus bioflavonoid extract (PMF-source) and TocoSource Tocotrienols complex. TocoSource tocotrienols complex is from sustainably sourced palm, and is a member of the vitamin E family. Exclusive PMF-source is a specific citrus bioflavonoid extract from sweet orange and contains researched flavonoids such as nobiletin and tangeretin. Cholstrienol

These clinically trialed ingredients may assist:

*  Healthy people to maintain cholesterol within the normal range
Assist health cholesterol levels
Improve the LDL:HDL cholesterol ratio
*  Maintain triglyceride levels within the normal range

Cholesterol Manager:
This Thompson’s Nutrition product uses a patented Conifer extract, rich in Phytosterols and also Phytostanols.  Thompson’s tell us that these natural components “Mimic the chemical structure of cholesterol and so block the absorption of dietary cholesterol.  Less cholesterol moves into the bloodstream and more is excreted from the body. Cholesterol is used to produce bile, which assists in the digestion of fats. Cholesterol manager stops the body reabsorbing this cholesterol, thus further reducing cholesterol levels”. cholesterol-manager

Cholesterol Manager has been a popular product for those looking for an alternative to cholesterol lowering medications and also for those who have read about the all round cardiovascular benefits of phytosterols.

Red Yeast Rice:  I dont know how much longer we will be able to get Red Yeast Rice, but at the moment, we still have the one from Natures Sunshine Products. Red yeast rice is the fermented product of rice (Oryza sativa) on which red yeast (Monascus purpureus) has been grown.

It has been used in China for hundreds of years, in rice wine, as a food preservative and also medicinally.  Its what is painted onto Peking Duck, to give it its rich colour.  In the Chinese Pharmacopoeia Ben Cao Gang Mu-Dan Shi Bu Yi, published during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), red yeast rice was characterised as “useful for blood circulation”.

When the therapeutic benefits on cholesterol levels were discovered, from the use of Red Yeast Rice, pharmaceutical companies isolated the active ingredients and chemically synthesised these, resulting in the first Statin drugs being made.  They would have got excited when they read the research on trials of Red Yeast Rice, which showed its consumption (typically 14-55 grams per day) was able to reduce cholesterol concentrations by 11-32% and triglycerides by 12-19%.

Monascus produces a substance (monacolin K or lovastatin) that inhibits HMG-Co A reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol synthesis.  It also contains phytosterols that reduce cholesterol re-absorption.  red-yeast-rice

Due to its very effective cholesterol reducing results, Red Yeast Rice has been re classified by many countries as a medicine.  Because of this, in many countries including Australia, it can only be prescribed by a doctor.   Try getting your GP to prescribe Red Yeast Rice instead of a Statin!  If you find someone who will do this, be sure to let us know, so we can refer other people to them.

Other Natural Supplements for Healthy Cholesterol levels

Other important aspects for better cholesterol levels include:

Support better liver function: It is your liver that has to process the cholesterol, so giving it a “tune-up” to make sure it is working as well as it can, is an important step in having better cholesterol levels.   We tune up our car once a year, to make sure it is working optimally, but what about our own vehicle our body, and our chemical laboratory – Our Liver.  It is really easy for our liver function to become poor.  This could be reflected in our Liver Function blood test, which may show high liver enzymes, such as high bilirubin, GGT and/or ALT levels.  If your liver function is poor, it is very difficult to have good cholesterol levels.

My “impact” Liver supporting range are any of the supplements from the Natures Way Thisilyn family of products. These all contain the patented Milk Thistle extract Thisilyn, made by the German Herbal Pharmaceutical company Schwabe. Thisilyn helps our liver to regenerate 4 times faster than usual, as well as putting a protective “coating” around, to protect it from the damaging effects of environmental toxins.Thisilyn

I have witnessed the most amazing and often dramatic results from the use of Thisilyn.  I have seen “over the top” liver and cholesterol levels,  where the person has come into my shop with a 3 month time limit from their GP, to “make some changes” to these results.  In virtually everyone, the changes have been dramatic within this time frame and with continued daily use, these have got better and better.

If your GGT levels are very high, you may need something as well as the Thisilyn, to start to move this cholesterol.

Lypo Gold, When taken between a meal, can help with a fatty liver.  It contains a really high dose of Lipases, enzymes that break fat down.  Many people do not produce Lipase in adequate amounts,lypo-gold to break the fat down in their diet or their stored body fat.  When taken between a meal, the Lipases help remove fats from the blood (cholesterol and triglycerides) and from the liver (fatty liver).  When you consume Lypo Gold at a meal, it takes stress off the gallbladder, liver, and pancreas, by providing the enzyme needed to break down the fats.  When taken on an empty stomach between a meal, the enzymes are able to circulate in the bloodstream, supporting cardiovascular health.

Essential fatty Acids:  These are a group of essential fats, that are vital for helping reduce inflammation in the body, reduce triglycerides and improve blood viscosity.  If your cholesterol test shows you have low HDL (good) cholesterol and high LDL (bad) cholesterol, then increasing the level of essential fatty acids in your diet should help with this ratio.  Good fats and oils from Fish (especially Salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines) and seeds like hemp, flax and evening primrose provide a good natural source of these fatty acids.hi-strength-liquid-fish-oil

Our best fish oil is the Ethical Nutrients Hi Strength Fish Oil liquid, where 1 x 5ml teaspoon provides a huge 2,700mg of actual Omega 3 fatty acid. This is equivalent to having 10 x 1000mg Fish oil capsules.   Another way to get this is to consume oily fish like Salmon.  I read on the label of Regal New Zealand King Salmon and this tells me that a 180 gram piece of their Salmon provides a whopping 2240mg of Omega 3.  You need this amount (2-3 grams) every day though, for better cardiovascular health and for its anti inflammatory effect.

If you want a vegetarian source of essential fatty acids, then Udo’s oil is the ultimate combination. Supportive, but not conclusive,  research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids (like found in Udo’s Oil) may help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.  I am a huge fan of Udo’s oil.  I love the taste and I love the effect it has on my cardiovascular system, as is reflective in blood tests such as CRP.

Fibre:  A high fibre diet is vital for those with high cholesterol, with Oat Bran being of particular importance. Oat bran is the edible, outermost layer of the oat kernel.  When eaten regularly, it can help to lower total cholesterol levels by 25% or more, within one to three months.  in addition, oat bran can help to reduce the bad LDL and raise levels of good HDL cholesterol.

Other ways to increase fibre in your diet is to choose whole grain options when buying packaged foods, to have salad vegetables with your main meals and lightly stir fried vegetables as your veggie option in the evening.  I LOVE grated raw beetroot, carrot and swede, with a tangy lemon and balsamic vinegar dressing, with my favourite Udo’s oil.  What a great way to get your fibre intake up.

Vitamin C  is considered Natures Perfect Statin.  A statin works to lower cholesterol by blocking the Coenzyme HMG-CoA reductase. The first statin drugs were released in 1987.  Since then, the manufacturing and promoting of these drugs has grown into a huge business, making statins the most widely prescribed class of drugs in history.vitamin-c-with-hesperidin-complex

In 1985, scientists made an important discovery.  Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is the human body’s natural HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor.  When Vitamin C levels are low, the body compensates and manufacturers more cholesterol; when levels are high, the vitamin inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, lowering the bodys cholesterol level naturally.

Remember that the main problem with artificial statin drugs is that they concurrently reduce circulating levels of ubiquinone, more commonly known as Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10.  A decline in CoQ10, attributed to artificial statin use, has been linked to muscle pain, muscle myopathy and congestive heart failure.  Because of this, it is VITAL that anyone taking cholesterol lowering medication also takes CoQ10, around 100-200mg per day.

I like the Ethical Nutrients Hi Strength Q10 150mg. This product uses an exclusive hi-strength-q10-absorbbioavailability delivery system called VESIsorb, which a study has shown to increase coenzyme Q10 absorption by an average of 622% (6 times higher absorption).

Last but not least, getting out and exercising regularly is essential for helping lower cholesterol.  Studies have proven that exercising regularly elevates the good HDL cholesterol levels.  It is suggested we exercise for around 30 minutes, between three and five times a week.

If you are going to give natural methods a chance to help to lower your cholesterol level, remember it will take a minimum of three months to notice ANY change in your blood test results.  Why not get a copy of the book The Liver Cleansing Diet by Dr Sandra Cabot, an Australian doctor who specialises in the health of the liver and adopt the dietary changes she has suggested in this.  Half of the book is Liver friendly recipes that are easy to incorporate into your weekly diet.    It looks like this
