As an ex-cigarette smoker, I know first hand how very difficult it is to give up smoking.  It doesn’t matter how much other people harp on about how you should give up, you have to really want/need to give up yourself to follow through with this. It takes a lot of determination, discipline and a plan of action to actually give up.  Read on to find out about the natural options available to help to give up smoking.

Advertisements like this did not persuade people to give up smoking, but instead, encouraged them.

I smoked cigarettes for a good 10 years before I decided to give up.  My dad was a smoker, so I was bought up with a smoker around me. My grand parents all smoked and in those days, it wasn’t considered as bad for you as it is now known to be.

In fact, from the 20s to the 50s doctors promoted smoking to their patients, such as in this advertisement here.  This ad used an actor and not a real doctor, but still, we all know there is absolutely no way any advertising company could get away with this blatant promotion of their product by a doctor. AND, we all think/thought that what ever our family doctor told us, must be 100% correct, so if the doctor is promoting it, it must be ok.

In the mid 1930s, an advertising campaign for Philip Morris cigarettes referred to “research conducted by physicians”.

In one of their advertisements, it claimed that after prescribing Philip Morris brand cigarettes to patients with irritated throats, “every case of irritation cleared completely or definitely improved.”

I wonder how much their sales increased the week that advertisement came out.

Natural Options to Help Give Up Smoking

We have two main options to help people who want to or who are ready to give up smoking.

Withdrawal of Nicotine

It takes around 2 weeks to lose your nicotine addiction.  After that, most of what you experience is habit.  In my own experience, one of the worst parts for me were the extremely vivid dreams that I had EVERY night for 2 years after stopping.  Every night I dreamed that I was smoking and I would wake up in a panic, thinking I had blown it and that I had had a cigarette and started smoking again, only to realise that it was only a dream.  It really did take 2 years for these dreams to stop.   I also found myself holding pens, pencils and anything else that looked like a cigarette, in the same way I did my cigarette.  I would even catch myself lifting these to my mouth!

Breaking the cycle

I smoked a lot.  I smoked from the moment I got up, until I went to bed.  I always had to have a cigarette after certain things and especially after eating.  I was pre occupied with having another cigarette and it was a major part of my thought processes  – Shall I have another cigarette.  Going out as a teenager was the worst and especially when I drank alcohol, when I would literally chain smoke.  I really do wish I had never started smoking.  Interestingly, my 3 siblings all smoked too.  All but my eldest brother have given up.

Believe me when I tell you, that most addictive feelings are only momentary.  If you can suck a craving tablet and distract yourself, so you think of something else, you will lose the feeling very quickly.  If possible, leave the room and in this case, do something you usually would not associate with having a cigarette – like a shower, a run or sporting activity, or visit a friend who is a non smoker.
