Multi-100 multivitamin

Multi-100 multivitamin

There is so much information out there about what a Multi Vitamin should multi-100 multivitamin contain.  There’s all different types and being New Zealander’s we need a Multi-vitamin that is going to suit our specific needs. This means that it is very important that we choose carefully when we are looking at taking a Multi-vitamin health supplement and believe me, there are so many out there! When I was looking through my shop to review the different types today I found that I had 18 different Multi-vitamins. It’s no wonder that people get so confused and don’t know which one to choose.

So what is a Multi-Vitamin?

Generally speaking, a Multi-vitamin health supplement is a B Complex that also contains trace elements, such as Zinc and Selenium – hopefully the trace elements that are missing in our soils;  because particularly here  in New Zealand, we have some very specific ones.  These include Zinc, Selenium and Boron.  So we would hope for us here in New Zealand,  that any Multi-Vitamin would contain those key nutrients or elements.

When it comes to choosing a multi-vitamin, a lot of people ask me “Has it got a good amount of Calcium and Magnesium in it?” Ill tell you now, that there is No way that a good multi-vitamin supplement is also going to give a good a mount of calcium and magnesium, to help to cover your daily needs of these minerals.   As I said above,  a multi-vitamin is basically a B complex with trace elements in it.  So if you need extra calcium and magnesium (which most of us do)  then you need to choose a seperate, individual supplement that will provide you with the proper amounts of these minerals (Ca 800-1500mg per day & Mg 200-600mg per day).

Now lets have a look at some of the Multi-Vitamins that we stock here at healthyonline. We will start with our absolute best and work our way down.

So my absolute “Rolls Royce” multi-vitamin is the Country Life  “Multi-100”. I absolutely LOVE  this multi-vitamin and I recommend it to all the people that want an “impact” type Multi.  It’s for those people who only want to take 1 supplement. I recommend this particularly to those REALLY hard working stressed out business guys. Particularly those who really aren’t into taking supplements or who have not really taken nutritional supplements before, BUT they are feeling pretty/really stressed or hammered and would like to take something to help them get through the day (without taking stimulants!). They want an Impact type Multi and that is what the Country life Multi 100 is.

It comes from America and is produced by a really good brand “Country Life”.  This product is different to any other multi-vitamin supplements that I have and the reason why is because this is a “time release” multi-vitamin.  So what this means is the nutrients, like the B vitamins (the ones that help with energy production in our body) are released more slowly throughout the day.  We have to remember that B vitamins are are water soluble.  We dont store them in our body, So when we take a supplement that has B Vitamins in it,  our body grabs onto those B Vitamins that it wants/needs and we pretty much urinate the rest out.  But with a time release, like in the Multi-100, the nutrients are released more slowly, throughout the whole day, rather than all at once. This is generally done by getting a certain amount of nutrients and then puting a coating around this, and then another layer of nutrients and another coating.  As the tablet travels through our digestive system, the coating is broken down and another layer of nutrients is released.

So in this multi-vitamin we have 100mgs of each of your main B Vitamins. Now if you read our earlier article on Centrum you’ll remember that in 1 Centrum tablet contains only about 1.7mgs of some B Vitamins! Multi-100 has 100mg,  so it’s pretty different.  Multi-100 is my favourite.  Dont take it in the evening, as you will not sleep.

At Ideal Health, this is our own in house Multi-Vitamin and my own formulation – Multi-Vite.  Obviously I really like this product, but still the “Country Life Multi-100” is the superior product.

When I formulated the Multi-Vite I took into consideration the soil depletion here in New Zealand. With our low levels of Zinc, Selenium and Boron I made sure I added as much of these as Med Safe would legally allow me to.

In this Multi-Vite health supplment I have 25mgs of the major B Vitamins, compared to the 100mg in the Multi-100.   I added 50 mcg of Selenium and 10mgs of Zinc.  I chose what i believe are the most absorbable forms of nutrients too, for maximum absorpbtion.  So this is a good supplement for both men and women.  In fact, i formulated this so that teenagers can take this too.  It is important to remember though, if you are a woman, that no vitamin is probably going to give you enough Iron.  Iron levels need to be independently evaluated, so if you have low Iron you will not get it from taking a multi-vitamin.  This is the same of calcium and magnesium.  You need to take these separately too.

The reason that we don’t generally put Iron into Multi-Vitamins, is so that both Men and Women can take it.  A lot of men have high Iron levels already and for that reason, I would never recommend a man take an Iron supplement unless they have had a test that specifically showed that they had low Iron.  This is the same for Women as well but particularly in a Man.

Vitamin supplements, such as a Multivitamin and an iron supplement should be taken in the morning, as they are energising.  Calcium and magnesium supplements are best taken at night time, to help you to unwind and relax.

Go Multi Everyday

Then there are two other multi-vitamins that I have here,  both of which are New Zealand products. These are the NFS’s Muti Daily Essentials and Go Healthy’s Go Multi Everyday. These come in capsules and again I like them coming from New Zealand because you would expect that they will have taken into consideration our soil depletion here in New Zealand. These products here are fairly similar to one another with both containing around 75-77mg of B Vitamins per capsule.  So you would think these would produce some kind of imapct, with all those energy producing nutrients.

This next multi-vitamin is very specialised.  Its name is Twinlabs Daily One.   This multi is very different to a lot of multi-vitamin health supplements that I stock mainly because it contains a huge 200mcg of selenium per capsule. We all hear about selenium and how important it is for our immune system, thyroid and prostate health here in New Zealand. 200 micrograms is a huge whack and really is enough to helps to produce a therapeutic action in the body.

Daily One multivitamin

Daily One multivitamin

Another good thing about Daily One is it also has a lot of Chromium in it – much  more than any other combination nutrient product I stock.  In one of these capsules, it contains 200mch of Chromium – which is really great for helping with carbohydrate metabolism, blood sugar levels and sugar cravings.  So if your one of those people that really crave for sugar during the day, Daily One may be the Multi-Vitamin for you.  This supplement also has a good amount of B Vitamins, that vary from 25mgs up to about 50mgs for some of them.  There is also 800mcg of folic acid per capsule too.

Now just quickly, I really need to mention this. A lot of people ask me about “Berocca” telling me that they take Berocca and because of this, they do not need to take a Multi vitamin.  I would like to let you all know, that  Berocca is not a Multi-Vitamin.   Berocca is a “B Vitamin” with a few other nutrients added (like vitamin C).   The reason why I do not recommend Berocca, is because is contains the artificial sweetener Aspartame and I absolutly do not recommend ANYTHING that contains Aspartame.

It is really important to be aware, when you are looking at a Multi-Vitamin label, that you read is properly. Don’t just read the information on the front, that is telling you about the advertising information. Have a look at the actual ingredients on the back, so you know what you are really getting.  What I find,  is that a lot of information is very misleading or even deceptive.

The next product that I stock is from Clinicians.  Their Vitamin & Mineral Boost.  If you look at the label, you will see that this wonderful assortment of nutrients is what is contained in four capsules,  not one but 4.  So again, it is very important to read the label and read the dosage instructions so you know how many the company are telling you to take.  I love this product.  It is very high quality and made here in New Zealand.  It also comes in s powder and is one of my favourite products to recommend to a family, because everyone over 12 months can take the product.  You just adjust the dosage, depending on the age group.  It as a strong orange lemon base, rich in Vitamin C.  I suggest having it in a small “shot” with a little water, followed by water or juice.

USANA multivitamin

USANA multivitamin

Finally I want to take a look at USANA not because I stock the product but because a customer specifically asked me to do a comparison between the USANA nutrients and the other supplements that we have. I will be writing an article specifically on USANAs products and I do have some information that can be viewed specifically about it here. Again the most important thing to realise with a supplement like this is that the amount of nutrients are not based on taking just one tablet they are based on taking 3 of the “Mega Antioxidant” and 3 of the “MultiMineral” so 6 in total to provide you with the amount of nutrients that are listed on the label.

Just so you know, in taking 1 of these tablets you get 7mgs of Zinc and only 8mcgs of selenium. Early on, you will have read that with the ‘Daily One’ we were getting 200mcg of Selenium. With the Multi-Vite we were getting 50mcg of Selenium,  so compare these with just 8mcg in the USANA Essentials.

If you have specific needs; say like you are pregnant or you have cardio-vascular problems, there are specific MultiVitamin supplements out there for you. I will be writing soon specifically about the pregnancy Multi’s that are available because this is so important. You want to know that you are feeding your baby properly, as well as getting enough nutrients so you can actually function properly yourself.

Thanks Leanne for more great information, we purchased the multi 100 for our son who was desperately in need of extra supplementation in his life after working a long day being tired and stressed. Even good eating was not enough. The results from taking the multi 100 were like night and day. His smile has returned along with energy and well being. Many thanks
